History

The district of Schleswig-Flensburg is a region deeply rooted in a unique, cross-border identity, where German and Danish cultures have been intertwined for centuries. Historically, the area was part of the Duchy of Schleswig, but for generations the area alternated between Danish control and Prussian rule, a tug-of-war that is famous in European history as the "Schleswig-Holstein Question".

The district's roots stretch even further back to the Viking Age. Near the city of Schleswig lies Hedeby, which was one of the most important Viking trading hubs in Europe. After a historic referendum in 1920, the current border was established, leaving behind a peaceful, bilingual society where minorities on both sides thrive together today.
